Outdoor Learning
We are fortunate to have the most amazing outdoor space at Westwood with Iford, including the fantastic resource of our own woodland and pond. We offer Outdoor Learning to make the most of our incredible environment.
Outdoor Learning is a child-led experience offering the opportunity for children to develop their confidence, self-esteem and social skills, as well as learn new skills and increase their knowledge of the natural environment.
Our sessions are run by our experienced Outdoor Learning Leader and take place within school grounds.
All children take part in Outdoor Learning sessions. These sessions are spread through the school year in class blocks.
To take part in a Outdoor Learning session, your child should wear long trousers and a long sleeved top. A waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers and appropriate footwear such as walking boots or wellies are essential. Sun cream and a sun hat should be provided during the summer months, and warm layers, hat and gloves in the winter.
To maximise the time your child has for their session, they may come to school in their Forest School clothing, but don't forget to bring spare shoes for wearing in the classroom, as well as a bag for wet or muddy clothing!
Woodland Trust's Green Tree Schools Awards
Our school is delighted to be involved with Green Tree Schools Awards scheme. This award scheme encourages outdoor learning and inspires pupils about trees, woods and wildlife. Schools are rewarded for completing environmental projects such as tree planting, reducing CO2 emissions and visiting woods.Points are collected for each activity completed, progressing through Bronze, Silver and Gold levels, up to the prestigious Plantinum Award.
At Westwood with Iford Primary School, we are proud to have achieved Gold Award status with the Woodland Trust's Green Tree Schools Award and are currently working towards Platinum Award status.
