Physical Education (PE) & Sports
At Westwood with Iford, we aim to provide a PE curriculum that all children not only enjoy but also allows them to experience a range of activities that help them to develop their health, fitness and wellbeing. We offer 2 hours a week of high-quality PE teaching that hopefully inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It provides opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness.
Our curriculum enables children to develop knowledge, skills and vocabulary in a broad range of sporting activities, as well as developing values and transferrable life skills such as fairness and respect.
We have a proactive Year 5 and Year 6 sports leadership programme; children in this programme lead sporting activities such as sports day, organise games at lunchtimes and learn to lead by example. Leadership gives children the understanding of what it is like to have responsibility, to show respect for rules and brings the added challenge of organisation, communication and teamwork.
We strive to give as many children as possible the opportunity to participate in a variety of competitive sports during their school life, giving them the prospect of understanding what competition feels like, what it is like to be part of a team, and to be able to both win and lose with equal grace.
We hope that all these opportunities will help our children to develop into well-rounded and balanced individuals all set for life's challenges.
